Why Choose Pilates

When it comes to moving your entire body and being flexible, we often think about professional gymnasts and fitness enthusiasts. However, every single person has the core body potential to move as easily and as flexibly, as this is what the human body is designed to do. In the twenty-first century, people often spend more time sitting as opposed to doing something that requires movement. This is time spent sitting in the car or sitting at a desk. The Pilates method can enable the human body to reach targeted fitness levels meaning that Pilates can help any body of any fitness level to reach their targeted flexibility and strength. The Pilates method can improve the human body through greater joint mobility, joint stability, bone density and more, all benefiting the body and improving balance. Having improved and stable balance is important as people approach later life and acting early with Pilates can help.

Alongside improving the human body, Pilates can also help those suffering from Back Pain, more specifically Lower Back Pain. The various apparatus and methods used within the Pilates Exercise can help with the stiffness of many Lower Back Problems, along with any other pain issues. Pilates is often encouraged through physiotherapists and other Medical Practitioners to support rehabilitation programmes. Pilates can also help with building structural fitness and strength, addressing areas of tightness or pain by working on the entire body. It can help to improve areas that may be particularly weak or painful. The Pilates Method is also beneficial if you partake in sport or physical activity, especially if it causes injuries or strains on a semi-regular basis. It can also be beneficial if your posture is poor during these physical activities as stretching and performing efficiently prevents injury.

Sure, when you carry out Pilates, you may not feel any screaming pain or burning muscles, however, it doesn’t mean that it’s not working. It’s about re-educating your body and increasing the capability through the range of exercise that Pilates has to offer. It’s not a quick exercise or a quick-fix when it comes to working out through Pilates. It builds your strength and capabilities through a more long-term approach. Over time, you will improve your flexibility, strength and functional movement.

Alongside the physical improvements of Pilates, it can also be quite de-stressing and relaxing. It provides an allotted time with your mind focusing on your body, leaving you feeling calm and refreshed after a class. A lot of people also benefit from improved sleep! You can give Pilates a try at Powerhouse Pilates Studio, allowing you to see for yourself just how amazing this method of exercise really is.

What Makes Pilates Different

Classical Pilates is Pilates in the most authentic format, as Joseph Pilates intended the exercises to be carried out. There are over 500 exercises to experience on the mat and varied Pilates apparatus. Classical Pilates focuses on moving the entire body to improve the body evenly. In the Original Classical Pilates method, there is a sequence and method to the work, which has been designed to move the body through a whole range of movement. The Classical Pilates Method starts with Foundational Exercises to begin with and then as you build strength and control, the exercises become more complex. When practicing authentic Pilates, the method provides a variety of benefits to you and your body. The benefits include;

  • Coordination
  • Strength
  • Mobility
  • Proper Posture
  • Improved Flexibility
  • Injury Prevention
  • Relief From Joint Pain
  • And more importantly, integration of the Mind, Body & Spirit.

Powerhouse Classical Pilates Studio has a wide range of equipment including Mats, Reformers, Wunda Chair, Towers, Spine Correctors, and Foot Correctors.

The Pilates Movement
Principles are:

Flow – Breathing – Concentration – Control – Centering – Precision

The Pilates Movement Principles were created through Joseph’s theories which were condensed into 6 simple ideas to make his method accessible for generations of students. Our Pilates classes at Powerhouse Pilates focus on each area of the Movement Principles to improve your entire body evenly. The more you practice Pilates, the more these principles will become second nature within your daily well-being. Movement is critical in everything that the human body does. Whether it be working out or daily living, movement is involved in every area of living.

Flow:

Pilates routines and exercises are carried out through a gentle flow. This ensures that the various exercises on offer through Pilates is gentle and beneficial, regardless of your age or fitness level. Ease & Fluidity is the intention that Joseph Pilates applied to all of the Pilates exercises and methods. The idea is that ease & fluidity encourages the body to move without struggle, even through the most difficult and testing challenges.

Breathing:

Pilates is about improving your body both Physically and Mentally. One important focus for your entire body is the breath. Like a lot of exercises, correct breathing is essential for a fulfilled, safe workout and Pilates isn’t any different. Regardless of what exercise you are doing within Pilates, you need to be breathing and inhaling enough oxygen into your body to ensure a safe workout.

Joseph Pilates has been quoted as once saying “Breathing is the act of life, and the last… above all learn how to breathe properly”.

Concentration:

The moves and challenges presented by the exercises within Pilates require you to focus on what you are doing and how you are doing it. Joseph Pilates knew that by concentrating on the movements that his students were doing with their bodies, that the results they would see would be beneficial to the entire body.

Control:

The Control Principle was created by Joseph and states that every Pilates exercise should be carried out with complete muscular control. He also stated that no body should be left to its own devices, it should be a conscious but specific movement that is fully controlled by the mind.

Pilates was originally called Contrology and as a result, the Control Principle was created. He placed great emphasis on the importance of deliberately controlling every movement when performing the Pilates exercises.

He designed the Pilates Apparatus for this purpose too, as the apparatus requires complete control of the body to make sure that the pulleys and springs of the machines glide smoothly.

However, for Joseph, Control was more than just about the body. Several of his first students said “Pilates is about stretch, strength and control. The importance of control is about using your mind to power your actions.”

Centering:

Centering refers to the connection between your mind and your body as a whole. It’s about the center of your body, which is often referred to as the core and ensuring that the area of which the core covers is exercised properly. For Joseph Pilates, the centre or core of your body contains almost like a “box” that covers the middle of your body. It’s this area that you workout and build when you are exercising, especially when you are carrying out Pilates and the Pilates method.

A strong & stable center is essential to a good Pilates workout as this is where your body movements originate from. It’s your mind and your center that control your movements and control what your entire body is doing.

The centre is often referred to as the ‘core’ or ‘powerhouse’ which includes your diaphragm, deep abdominals, pelvic floor muscles and multifidus.

Precision

When it comes to Pilates, precision is what encourages your awareness, balance and control in the same, specific manner, every time. Focusing on precision enables you to be present and connected 100% throughout your Pilates workout.
