Pilates Foot Corrector

This piece was created for those who suffered with Foot issues as Joseph believed that your feet are the foundation to the rest of your body, especially when it comes to working out. It is used for Joint Alignment as when it comes to aligning joints, you start with your feet as a base.

When you are building your body both mentally and physically, you need strong and stable foundations. Your feet are the foundations that you need to ensure are in their optimum position, which the Pilates Foot Corrector helps to support.

Pilates Spine Corrector

The Pilates Spine Corrector is an essential piece of Pilates equipment. This apparatus can be used to lengthen and straighten the torso, shoulders, back and legs. It’s done through various exercises that can be performed using the Spine Corrector that enable your body to improve physically. Alongside the Pilates Spine Corrector being a piece of equipment that is used to lengthen and straighten various areas of the body, it also restores the natural curvature of the spine through the various exercises. Restoring the natural curvature of the spine improves the posture of the body too, resulting in a straightened, lengthened posture and body position.

Using the Pilates Spine Corrector can also help with any back pain, especially lower back pain that you may experience due to your spine being over-curved. It’s a tool that can provide a variety of benefits to you as a user

Pilates Wundachair

The Pilates Wundachair is a piece of apparatus that is used within the method of Pilates to carry out an Efficient, Full Workout in a short amount of time. The Wundachair resembles a backless chair that consists of a wooden base. It is also topped by a padded seat. The Wundachair allows you to carry out exercises while sitting in an upright position. However, you can also use the Wundachair while standing on top, behind, or in front of the chair.

The idea behind the Pilates Wundachair is to provide a challenging, varied workout in a small amount of space. Alongside space, it also enables you to get a full, efficient workout in a short amount of time, without changing equipment or apparatus.

Why Choose Us?

In the twenty-first century, people often spend more time sitting as opposed to doing something that requires movement. This is time spent sitting in the car or sitting at a desk. This leads to many health issues such as poor posture, lower back pain, shoulder pain and general muscle weakening across the whole body. Classical Pilates is Pilates in the most authentic format, as Joseph Pilates intended the exercises to be carried out. There are over 500 exercises to experience on the mat and varied Pilates apparatus. Classical Pilates focuses on moving the entire body to improve the body evenly. In the Original Classical Pilates method, there is a sequence and method to the work, which has been designed to move the body through a whole range of movements. The Classical Pilates Method starts with Foundational Exercises to begin with and then as you build strength and control, the exercises become more complex. When practicing authentic Pilates, the method provides a variety of benefits to you and your body.

The Pilates Movement Principles

The Pilates Movement Principles were created through Joseph’s theories, which were condensed into 6 simple ideas to make his method accessible for generations of students. Our Pilates classes at Powerhouse Pilates focus on each area of the Movement Principles to improve your entire body evenly. The more you practice Pilates, the more these principles will become second nature within your daily well-being. Movement is critical in everything that the human body does. Whether it be working out or daily living, movement is involved in every area of living.

Pilates routines and exercises are carried out through a gentle flow. This ensures that the various exercises on offer through Pilates is gentle and beneficial, regardless of your age or fitness level. Ease & Fluidity is the intention that Joseph Pilates applied to all the Pilates exercises and methods. The idea is that ease & fluidity encourage the body to move without struggle, even through the most difficult and testing challenges.
Pilates is about improving your body, both Physically and Mentally. One important focus for your entire body is the breath. Like a lot of exercises, correct breathing is essential for a fulfilled, safe workout and Pilates isn’t any different. Regardless of what exercise you are doing within Pilates, you need to be breathing and inhaling enough oxygen into your body to ensure a safe workout. Joseph Pilates has been quoted as once saying “Breathing is the act of life, and the last... above all learn how to breathe properly”.
The moves and challenges presented by the exercises within Pilates require you to focus on what you are doing and how you are doing it. Joseph Pilates knew that by concentrating on the movements that his students were doing with their bodies, that the results they would see would be beneficial to the entire body.
Pilates is about stretch, strength and control. The importance of control is about using your mind to power your actions.” The Control Principle was created by Joseph and states that every Pilates exercise should be carried out with complete muscular control. He also stated that no body should be left to its own devices, it should be a conscious but specific movement that is fully controlled by the mind. Pilates was originally called Contrology and as a result, the Control Principle was created. He placed great emphasis on the importance of deliberately controlling every movement when performing the Pilates exercises. Pilates was originally called Contrology and as a result, the Control Principle was created. He placed great emphasis on the importance of deliberately controlling every movement when performing the Pilates exercises. He designed the Pilates Apparatus for this purpose too, as the apparatus requires complete control of the body to make sure that the pulleys and springs of the machines glide smoothly. However, for Joseph, Control was more than just about the body. Several of his first students said “Pilates is about stretch, strength and control. The importance of control is about using your mind to power your actions.”
Centering refers to the connection between your mind and your body as a whole. It’s about the center of your body, which is often referred to as the core or powerhouse and ensuring that the area of which the core covers is exercised properly. It includes your diaphragm, deep abdominals, pelvic floor muscles and multifidus. A strong & stable centre is essential to a good Pilates workout, as this is where your body movements originate from. It’s your mind and your centre that control your movements and control what your entire body is doing. The center is often referred to as the ‘core’ or ‘powerhouse’ which includes your diaphragm, deep abdominals, pelvic floor muscles and multifidus.
When it comes to Pilates, precision is what encourages your awareness, balance and control in the same, specific manner, every time. Focusing on precision enables you to be present and connected 100% throughout your Pilates workout.

Mixed equipment

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I bring to the studio?

All you need is comfortable workout gear – no loose clothing, grippy socks for the equipment, a water bottle and have your hair tied back. Loose clothing and loose/long hair may get caught in the equipment so it’s important to have it tied back. Normal socks cannot be worn on the equipment as they are too slippy.

If you are a complete beginner, we always recommend you do a 1:1 private session so that the instructor can discuss your health and wellbeing, and your goals and then do an assessment on your body and your specific needs, creating a specific plan for your body. It is also a good opportunity to introduce you to the different Pilates apparatus. Then, any class which begins with “beginner” is the one for you. At Powerhouse Pilates we have beginner reformer, beginner tower and beginner mat classes which cater for people who have never done Pilates before. The pre/postnatal mixes equipment classes and mixed equipment classes are also designed to cater for complete beginners.

Beginner – for complete beginners
Beyond Basics – for people who have done a number of beginner classes and are ready to take on more of a challenge. Intermediate/Advanced – for people who have gone through both beginner and beyond basics and know they are ready to be really challenged.
*Please ensure you do not book beyond basics or intermediate/advanced until you have
done a number of beginners classes*

The equipment classes were created to add resistance to the class by using springs. This helps to target specific weaknesses and we use specific props to balance out your body and any misalignment. On the mat, you use your body weight as your resistance. You may find that the equipment offers you more support, especially as a beginner. In short, use both. For optimal results, I recommend using the mat, tower and reformer to feel and see the the difference in your body.

The benefits of doing Pilates are endless but here are the main ones:

  • Improved flexibility
  • Improved posture
  • Improved pelvic floor strength
  • Better coordination and balance.
  • Prevention of musculoskeletal injuries
  • Improved concentration and body awareness
  • Increased lung capacity and circulation as a result of deep breathing
  • Increase in muscle strength and tone
  • Balanced muscular strength on both sides of your body
  • Improved spinal strength and stabilization of your spine
  • De-stress and improved relaxation.

While Pilates primarily focuses on strength, flexibility, and posture, it can contribute to weight loss indirectly. Regular practice can improve muscle tone, increase metabolism, and enhance overall fitness.

Yes, Pilates includes exercises specifically designed to engage and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. These exercises can be beneficial for both men and women, especially for improving bladder control and supporting the lower back.
